Spread of a early mortality syndrome (EMS) disease in the shrimp farms of Thailand and the shortage has also  puts Indian vannamei shrimp on high table in the global market.

The Economic Times Reported

FAO report on food outlook for 2013 says that it is a continuation of EMS problems experienced by Southeast Asian countries from China to Malaysia last year, which affected 80% of shrimp farms in Mekong delta with a major impact on Vietnamese producers.

Indian vannamei, produced in the farms based mostly in Andhra Pradesh, is fetching better prices now.

“The demand from US for vannamei shrimps has gone up as the production in Thailand has come down. The prices have jump ..

Higher demand and prices are likely encourage aquaculture farms to produce more. The aquaculture production of shrimps in India had gone up from Rs 1.30 lakh tonne to Rs 2.50 lakh tonne last year. “It may touch Rs 3 lakh tonne in the current year,” said L Satyanarayana, president of All India Shrimp Hatchery Association. According to him, heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh have delayed the stocking of seeds in the July-August period. He expects that to happen in the August-September period.
