Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) confident of raising exports this year by 20 per cent. Increase the export turnover to $5.6 billion during the current year is expected due to thrust on aquaculture diversification, improvement of quality and production infrastructure. There was a decline in the last fiscal when total seafood exports stood at 9,45,892 MT worth $ 4.7 billion ( Rs. 30,420.83 crores) but a reserve is expected here.
The revival of the aquaculture production (especially Shrimp) in Thailand and Vietnam has resulted in a better supply situation in the international market. This has eased the price situation of shrimp in the world over including India. Thus our average unit value realization of Frozen shrimp has come down to US$ 8.28 per kg. in 2015-16 as against US$ 10.38 in 2014-15.(Shrimp constitute 66% value of total exports). The depreciation of Euro, weaker economic condition in China, devaluation of Yen etc contributed to the decline in exports. Other factors contributed were the decline in capture fishery.
MPEDA chairman Dr. A. Jayathilak told The Hindu “we have also benefited tremendously by adopting Cluster Farming Approach(CFA). More than 90 per cent of the shrimp farmers in India are small or marginal farmers (less than 5 ha in area). New trends have emerged in production and marketing such as certification, traceability and eco-labeling. In this background, he said MPEDA felt the need to guarantee the quality of seafood produced for domestic and export markets. MPEDA has evolved a new mechanism for capacity building in shrimp health and quality management at grass-roots level by encouraging small-scale farmers into aqua societies.
